A lower-than-hoped NEET score feels like the end of a plan. It is usually the start of a choice between several good ones. Healthcare in India needs far more than doctors, and many of these careers are well-paid, respected and in demand. Here are the main recognised options, and how to think about a second attempt.
Courses that use your NEET score
- BDS — a five-year dental degree including internship, regulated by DCI. Read BDS vs MBBS.
- BAMS — Ayurvedic medicine and surgery, regulated by NCISM.
- BHMS — Homoeopathic medicine and surgery, regulated by NCH.
- BUMS and BSMS — Unani and Siddha medicine, regulated by NCISM.
- BVSc & AH — veterinary science, with all-India quota seats filled on the basis of NEET.
AYUSH counselling is explained in BAMS and BHMS admission through AACCC.
Courses that may or may not need NEET
- BSc Nursing — states and institutions use NEET, a state test or their own exam. Read the BSc Nursing admission guide.
- BPT (Physiotherapy) — admission through state tests, NEET in some states, or institutional merit.
Courses that usually do not need NEET
- BPharm — a four-year pharmacy degree regulated by PCI, often through state CETs. Read the BPharm admission guide.
- Allied health sciences — medical laboratory technology, radiology and imaging, optometry, anaesthesia technology, cardiac care technology and others.
- Life sciences — BSc in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics or nutrition, with routes into research, pharma and healthcare industry.
- Public health and hospital administration — longer-term routes into healthcare management.
Should you drop a year and reattempt?
A second attempt can work — but decide with data, not hope:
- How far was your score from the cutoff you need for a seat you can afford?
- Was the gap caused by preparation, or by circumstances that will not repeat?
- Can you prepare full-time with good support, and handle the pressure of another year?
- Is there a course you could start now that you would still be happy with?
Some families also consider studying medicine abroad; read private MBBS in India vs MBBS abroad first. Some students join a related course and prepare alongside it. Check the rules of the course and college before doing this.
Avoid this trap
Anyone offering an MBBS seat "without a good NEET score" through a private arrangement is not offering a real seat. Management and NRI seats are allotted through counselling on NEET merit. Read red flags of fake consultants.
