Deemed universities offer a large share of private MBBS and BDS seats in India, and they work differently from private colleges affiliated to state universities. All their seats are allotted through MCC — there is no separate "direct" route. This guide walks through the process.
What makes deemed universities different
A deemed university is an institution declared by the central government, on UGC's advice, to have university status. For medical admissions, the key differences are:
- All seats through MCC — including management and NRI seats.
- No domicile restriction — candidates from any state can apply.
- Fees set by the institution — published through MCC rather than fixed by a state fee committee.
- A higher security deposit at registration than for government seats.

Step-by-step process
- Qualify NEET-UG — eligibility for MBBS and BDS requires qualifying the exam.
- Register on the MCC portal — choose the deemed university category and pay the registration fee and security deposit.
- NRI candidates — opt for NRI quota during registration and upload NRI documents as required. See our NRI documents checklist.
- Choice filling — list deemed universities in your order of preference. You can usually fill choices across AIQ, deemed and central institutions in the same registration.
- Choice locking — lock your choices before the deadline; unlocked choices are often auto-locked.
- Seat allotment — check results on the MCC portal with your own login.
- Reporting — report to the allotted university with originals and fees within the deadline.
Fees
Deemed university fees are usually higher than private-college state-quota fees, and NRI fees are higher still. The university publishes its fee for each category, and MCC shares the information during counselling. Always check the total cost for every year of the course, including hostel. Read how private college fees are fixed.
Choice filling strategy
- Fill more choices rather than fewer — leaving out colleges you would accept reduces your chances.
- Order choices by genuine preference, not by perceived difficulty.
- Consider location, clinical exposure, total cost and hostel facilities alongside rankings.
- Understand the rules for upgrading in later rounds before you join a seat.
Find deemed universities
If the cost is out of reach, compare with MBBS abroad carefully. Browse private MBBS colleges and filter by type to find deemed universities, then open each college page for its official website and the information we have verified.
