Nursing is one of the most in-demand healthcare careers in India and abroad. A four-year BSc Nursing degree from a properly approved college opens doors to hospital, community, teaching and international roles. Admission rules vary by state, so here is how to navigate them.
Eligibility
BSc Nursing generally requires Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with minimum marks set by the Indian Nursing Council (INC). Minimum age and other conditions are also specified. Check the current INC norms and your state's prospectus for exact requirements. Course details are on our BSc Nursing page.
Entrance routes
There is no single national route. Depending on the state and institution:
- Some states use NEET-UG scores for BSc Nursing admission.
- Some states conduct their own entrance test or use a common state CET.
- Central institutions such as AIIMS conduct their own nursing entrance.
- Some private universities admit through an institutional test or merit, within state rules.
Check the route for each college on your list early, because registration windows differ.
Checking approval
A nursing college needs approval from INC and the state nursing council, and affiliation to a university. Approval is tied to intake and academic year. Confirm both before you pay. Read how to verify a college's approval.
Private colleges and management seats
Private nursing colleges commonly fill a share of seats through state counselling and the rest through the institution's process, depending on the state. Ask for the fee schedule for your category in writing and pay only to the institution. Read what management quota means.
