Pharmacy is a strong healthcare career that does not require NEET in most states. A four-year BPharm leads to roles in pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality control, regulatory affairs, hospital and community pharmacy, and research.
The pharmacy qualifications
- DPharm — a two-year diploma qualifying you to register as a pharmacist.
- BPharm — a four-year degree with broader scientific depth.
- PharmD — a six-year clinically oriented programme.
All are regulated by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI).
Eligibility
BPharm typically requires Class 12 with Physics and Chemistry plus Mathematics or Biology, with minimum marks as per PCI and state rules. DPharm holders can usually join BPharm in the second year through lateral entry.
Entrance routes
- State CETs — many states admit through a common entrance, such as MHT CET in Maharashtra.
- Private university tests — many universities run their own admission process.
- Merit-based admission — some colleges admit on Class 12 marks within state rules.
- Institute-level seats — private colleges may fill a share of seats themselves. Read the BPharm management quota guide.
Checking PCI approval
PCI approves pharmacy institutions and their intake each academic year. A pharmacy degree from an unapproved institution can stop you from registering as a pharmacist. Check the PCI list before paying fees. Read how to verify a college's approval.
Choosing a pharmacy college
- Labs and instrumentation for pharmaceutics, pharmacology and analysis.
- Industry tie-ups and training in manufacturing units.
- Hospital exposure for clinical pharmacy.
- Placement and higher-study outcomes (MPharm, MBA in pharma management).
