Law can be studied straight after Class 12 through a five-year integrated programme, or after graduation through a three-year LLB. Here is how admissions work for the integrated route.
Integrated programmes
- BA LLB — law combined with arts and social sciences.
- BBA LLB — law combined with business and management.
- BCom LLB, BSc LLB — offered by some institutions.
After graduation, the three-year LLB is the alternative route.
Entrance routes
- CLAT — conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities for admission to participating NLUs. Many private universities also accept CLAT scores.
- AILET — conducted by National Law University Delhi for its own programmes.
- Institutional tests — several private law schools run their own entrance tests or admit on merit.
- State tests and CUET-UG — some state and central universities use these.
BCI approval
The Bar Council of India approves institutions to offer law degrees. A law degree from an unapproved institution or course may not allow you to enrol as an advocate. Check BCI approval for the institution and programme. Read how to verify a college's approval.
Choosing a law school
- Moot court culture, legal aid clinics and internships.
- Faculty and library resources.
- Placement and litigation/judiciary preparation support.
- Total cost and scholarships.
BA LLB or BBA LLB?
Choose BA LLB if you are drawn to constitutional law, litigation, policy or judiciary; BBA LLB if you see yourself in corporate law, transactions or compliance. Both lead to the same professional qualification.
